Walk the talk

More than 60 years ago, former president of South Vietnam, Nguyen Van Thieu left a memorable quote on the Communists:

Don’t listen to what the Communists say, but look at what they do” – Nguyen Van Thieu

Well, it turns out to be quite true (!?) But the more interesting thing is it not only sounds true for the Communists but also for everyone in this world.

Don’t trust and believe in those who can only talk

I mean sometimes it’s great and necessary to be sweet and diplomatic, especially in life and love (sweet talkers win many girls’ hearts). But talking alone would lead you no where as far as doing. Promises are worthless if you don’t do anything. Spending a day talking is not as effective and convincing as spending a few hours getting things done.

It’s always easier to talk than do!

If you can’t do, don’t talk

I feel shameful for those who talk and boast about what they don’t do. In case of teachers, it’s even more shameful. Some teaching Entrepreneurship are actually cowards and risk avoiders. Some teaching Leadership can’t even lead their students. I don’t know why they can teach what they don’t do and believe. Or is it just their jobs to teach whatever they’re supposed to do? I hope they still have some integrity to realise this. Teachers can’t even do so what to expect from the students?

Of course as humans we prefer feelings (talking, sharing, etc.) than things (doing, buying, etc.). But the fact that we were all born with both mouths and hands. Why not use both instead of either one? Don’t over-think & hesitate. Just walk the talk & everything will be in order.

An interview with my cousin

Last week, a cousin of mine had come to Singapore with his daughter to visit his son who is studying JC here. Apparently we didn’t have much time to talk but I managed to have a small “interview” with him before he left. My question was short. “You’re now 51 – nearly 30 years older than me. You’ve lived almost 2/3 times of life. What’s your biggest regrets?”

From many others’ points of view, he’s a successful man. He’s got a happy family with a beautiful wife, a son studying abroad and a clever secondary-school daughter. Of course, he’s got a very decent career & a nice house too! His only concern now is to support & raise his children until they’re really mature which he refers to the University entrance.

But surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), he said it’s just the outward appearance. And when it comes to “regrets”, he does have quite a handful:

1. His biggest regret is Health (unsurprising for a man!)

He said he was still in good shape in the early 40s, let alone those early 20s & 30s. But now the consequences of over-drinking & partying while ignoring exercising begin to show up. It’s not so serious, he said. But he can’t drink much now as some diseases & pain starts to affect him. It’s terrible. I hope… he regretted! When we’re young, we all seem to take our health for granted while it’s actually our most important asset. It suddenly reminds me of Dalai Lama’s saying:

2. His second biggest regret is some skills he should have at least known

+ The first one is technology and foreign language as he didn’t know computer nor English at all. It makes me extremely less confident outside of my world – he regretted. When I come here I feel it more obvious than ever, he continues.

It’s followed by sport (football, table tennis, etc.) and art (singing, dancing, playing some musical instruments (guitar, piano, etc.). He doesn’t know how to play anything of those and that made him less “sociable” with friends. I’m friendly and “funny” but that’s all I have. When it came to other things like going karaoke or sport, I was just the “outsider”. But he masters his lessons and compensates for it in his children by providing them his best possible support in learning those extra skills which he claims to be very important apart from studying (knowledge) – and I totally agree with him.

3. The final one is once again unsurprising for me. It’s love (relationships).

He said although he has a wonderful family now, he didn’t have many memories in love and relationships. Some (very beautiful girls) had tried to approach him but he either refused or avoided them. If only I had the courage and right attitude to accept those invitations, he wished, I would have had a chance to know them at the very least. He may seem a bit greedy but I think it’s true. Relationships are utterly important in life.

But he thinks this is also partially a result of the 2 regrets above. If he had had a better health and a few of those skills, he would have very likely attracted many more people…

We finished at nearly 2 am on Friday night… gotta go sleep for our tomorrow work & flight..

Life is fun and Success is easy

Success is easy, do the easy things

Jim Rohn – the American’s foremost business philosopher, gives us a naked truth concisely: success is easy; do the easy things and do it everyday. Why is it easy? Well, it’s easy because almost all of us basically know what we should do and if we actually do it, it’s not hard at all. First, we know we should keep improving our skills and abilities; we know we should learn to communicate well; we know we should excercise regularly to keep healthy. Second, we also know we should stop eating fast food, junk food and smoking as they are harmful to our health in the long run. Don’t neglect to do the easy things is the advice he want us to really master. Here comes another great saying about life and success:

If you do what’s easy, your life will be hard; if you do what’s hard, your life will be easy

Does the famous “hard – life” Les Brown’s saying contradict with the “easy – sucess” Jim Rohn’s? The answer is not at all. Let’s first find out what he means by “easy”? Easy things here means the jobs and tasks that are simple, fun and irrelavent to our works and goals such as watching funny videos on Youtube, go Facebook, Twitter and reading news. It’s relaxing to watch videos. It’s fun to chit chat with friends. It’s conformtable to read news. Everyone can and wants to do those. Those time wasting activities contribute nothing to your skill improvement and goals at all, that’s why if you keeping doing what’s easy, your life will be hard. But did Jim Rohn just say, success is easy, just do the easy things? Well, Les Brown also clarifies what he means by hard? He said, we must try to do the hard things; make tough decisions. Tough decisions are tough not because we don’t know the answers. It’s tough because most of us don’t have the courage to do what we know.

Tough times never last but tough people do. Say, I’m tough! – Dr. Robert Schuller

Back to Jim, when being asked, if success is easy, why aren’t more people become successful? He said, what’s easy to do is also easy not to. He told us, the things he found to be easy to do, they found to be easy not to do. He found it easy to read the books that could affect his thinking and ideas. They found that easy not to do. He found it easy to attend the classes and the seminars, and to get around other successful people. They said it probably really wouldn’t matter. Six years later, as a result, He became a millionaire while they were all still blaming the economy, the government, and company policies, yet they neglected to do the basic, easy things.

In summary, let me give you some other words of Jim Rohn to conclude the article, when giving the choice of “easy to” and “easy not to”, do not neglect to do the simple, basic, “easy,” but potentially life-changing activities and disciplines. Successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people are not. Be successful, do the easy things.

Common Sense: common, make sense & wrong!

I had a good chat with a close friend of mine. We was talking about lots of shitty stuff that we don’t usually do. Among them was the common sense. After a while discussing, we both came to a same conclusion that: most of the so-called “common sense” are surprisingly wrong! In other words, most of those routine “principles” we apply in daily lives are unfortunately just fallacies.

Here is our own definition of common sense: Common sense are those which make sense, are very common and basically wrong!

Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down by the mind before you reach eighteen.” — Albert Einstein

The first two characteristics are straightforward. Because they sound right, “make sense” and are pretty easy to understand, they’re very common. But why are they intriguingly wrong? Well, it’s a well-known fact that the poor (& the middle class) is far more than the rich; the fat (& the skinny) is far more than the fit; the sad is great deal more than the happy? And you know something, they – the majority, interestingly share a common trait: they’re using & following common sense, which the minority don’t.

To illustrate the point, let’s take a look at some of the most popular “common sense” that are believed and applied by many folks:

  • We need to sleep earlier (as much as) in order to wake up earlier (to compensate each other)
  • We need to go to gym everyday, doing 10-20 sets of 100 to 200 repetitions of ab cruches and sit ups in order to get 6-pack abs
  • We need to skip meals and eat less in order to lose weight.
  • We need to get lots of money in order to become rich.
Here comes another interesting myth among the guys:
  • We need to be tall, handsome & have lots of money and such to date sexy, beautiful, long legged girls.

They all seem logical & legitimate right? Alright, let me tell you the truths:

  • Have you had a long 10-14 hours sleep, then waking up & still feeling tired and exhausted? Truth be told, it’s not really the number of hours you sleep but the quality of your sleep that matter!
  • Have you followed that strict schedule & exercise? Do you get 6-pack abs? If not, go & have a good diet instead (yet again the term “good diet” is really ambiguous and confused)!
  • You know what? If you follow that diet, eventually you’ll gain weight instead!
  • Refer to my old post “Money won’t make you rich”.
  • Have you ever seen pretty gorgeous gals hang out with some relatively short & “ugly”, & “homeless” guys? And this is not rarely at all. Looking for my coming post, “How to date every girl you like”  for the answers.

They are all actually very interesting & controversial topics, which I’d like to go further one by one in the near future.

Dr Jim Taylor in his post also about “common sense” says: perhaps the biggest problem with common sense is that it falls prey to the clear limits of personal experience. In fact, common sense is often used by people who don’t have the real knowledge, expertise, or direct experience to actually make sound judgements. If we know something very well, do we call them common sense? Apparently no, we call them facts. Further, what we believe to be true, have been told is true or even our own personal experience alone are obviously not adequate to draw reliable conclusions.

In short, the little wisdom that we learn after the discussion is simply to stop listening to and make judgement based solely on the so-called “common sense” from now!
