• First time riding a horse – not as easy as it seems though
• First time watching a circus
• Experience the Alms Giving Ceremony at sunrise around 5-5.30am
• Feel Great climbing to the top of Angkor Wat temple
• Enjoy nightlife experience, especially the street bars & night markets, in Siem Reap

Luang Prabang

• I can see some Vietnamese influence on Laos
  • They have certain Vietnamese dishes for breakfast like Chao (Porridge), Pho and Bun (Vietnamese noodles).
  • Many of them recognize & know how to speak Vietnamese
• It’s interesting & somewhat annoying (weird!!) at the same time to see the Communist Flag (hammer & sickle) everywhere – side by side with their national flag. They’re certainly more communist than his neighbor now. haha
• Foods are relatively expensive for many reasons; one being since it’s not developed yet, services are rare, and therefore, expensive but not that good either (monopoly). Anyway, our Vietnamese Dong has little purchasing power here :O
• The best place I visited is definitely the Kuang Si Falls which is 30km away from the town.

Siem Reap

• The tour guide blames the Thai for the destruction of some major sites on the Angkor Wat temples (3 among 8/9 towers are ruined?)

Lessons:

1. Always try to Buy simcard at the airport whenever possible. They’re more hands-on & speak English better, and so, can surely offer more help.
2. Always ask for better prices, negotiate, bargain or whatever you wanna call it
   It’s not about money – as it’s quite little & I don’t mind giving them good tips, but rather about your willingness to negotiate. Negotiate! everything in life

Principle vs Rules

This comparison popped into my head again when i was reading some blog post about the “Rules” that the author strives to live by during a Saturday lunch. Here are some differences between Rules & Principles that I find interesting:

• Rules are specific while Principles are more general yet specific enough to serve as a guideline
• Rules, to a certain extent, are too specific and therefore too rigid for many folks, which sometimes unintentionally set a limit on people/things
  Principles-centered folks don’t care how they do something as long as they complete it & don’t go against the principles
• There are far too many Rules to follow while there should be only a handful Principles to live by
• Rules are set (& therefore meant) to be broken while Principles are meant to guide & therefore will last
• Society is governed by Rules while people should be Principles-centered (7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

“Talent”

Lately, I’ve been so frustrated – deeply frustrated while working with certain people. They’re introduced to me as very “talented” folks (among them, one is a team lead; the others come here to work – meaning they’re top of their fields in their respective company). In fact, most of them are – well, at least better than I am technically. I was so excited to work with them. But it mostly ends up quite disappointing…

It turns out they all have some very similar problems. Guess what they are? Hint: it’s (un)surprisingly not technical skills:

• Communication (when to give updates, say “wait”)
• Accountability
• Planning
• Time management..

Communication is the most common, which I and many have had that problem too, but not the biggest issue here… It is that they can’t get things done on time. Even worse, they simply can’t even deliver what they promise. Somehow they don’t ever ever take their words seriously. Weird!

Cậu

Ở tuổi 73, Cậu đi không phải là trẻ chỉ là các dì lớn tuổi rồi mà vẫn còn quá khỏe mạnh…

Cậu vẫn lạc quan, vẫn kiên cường, vẫn đùa vui như bản tính của Cậu đến những giờ phút cuối cùng… Hôm 27 Tết lúc cậu đã đau lắm rồi mà vẫn gắng ngồi dậy nói chuyện với 2 đứa cháu đi xa về.
– “Con nớ nó hiền giống ba nó rứa” – Cậu đùa khi nói về chi công việc & lương bỗng của chị Anh – con Cậu.
Gặp Cậu lần đầu tiên sau cơn bạo bệnh, đứa cháu này không thể không thương. Cậu gầy đi quá nhiều; những cơn đau triền miên lại hành hạ Cậu đến xương tủy. Nhìn những miễn dán salampas khắp đầy người Cậu, người cháu này không thể không xót. Nhìn mẹ buồn, mẹ gầy, mẹ lo cho Cậu, người con này không thể không đau…

Người cháu này sẽ không quên được câu nói cuối cùng của Cậu trong cái ngày mà mẹ bảo “chắc đây là lần cuối cùng Thịnh gặp Cậu Lâm. Cậu chắc cũng không sống được bao lâu nữa.”

Thật vậy, người cháu này mới qua lại được tròn 2 tuần – trong đó tuần đầu tiên la liệt vì ăn chơi quá độ lúc Tết, thì được tin Cậu mất. Buồn, lạnh cả người…

Người cháu vẫn còn nhớ ít nhiều những kỉ niệm với Cậu:

• Suốt 4-5 năm nay Cậu luôn là người ‘đạp đất’ nhà cháu. Ba luôn gọi & hẹn cậu chiều, tối 30. “Nó mới điện tau hẹn sáng mai đó” – Cậu đùa.
• …
• Tối đỗ xăm hường lần đầu tiền với mấy anh chi em sau biết bao năm không ngồi lại với nhau (cách đây 2-3 năm; Tết nay mới là lần thứ 2). Chơi đến khuya. Sáng đó, Cậu chở cháu về.
• Lần cuối cùng, Cậu mời cháu ly bia khi gặp Cậu ở ngoài nha. Cháu kiếm cớ chở mẹ, từ chối dù chỉ là 1 ly nhỏ.

Ngày biết tin Cậu phát hiện ung thư, người cháu này sốc lắm, hỏi ngược xui cho Cậu… Nhưng cũng nhờ cái đưa đẩy này của số phận mà người cháu này được biết đến Thích Nhất Hạnh (It can be considered as a life turn of my life). Có những đêm thức đến 2, 3h sáng để nghe những bài giảng của thầy. Thầy giảng hay & sâu lắm Cậu à. Nhưng cái cháu thích nhất là sự trầm tỉnh, chậm rãnh và uy nghi của thầy.

Cậu đi xa nhưng không mất.
Cậu đã làm được quá nhiều điều mà 1 người bình thường cũng phải mơ ước.

Cậu cũng đã đi Mỹ, được thăm thú chị em, con cháu. Hai con của Cậu cũng đã lớn và lấy chồng. Cậu cũng đã có cháu – không chỉ một mà tận hai. Cậu cũng đã thăm ngôi trường NTP mới to đẹp mà Cậu đã có công lớn gầy dựng suốt hơn mười năm. Những gì Cậu làm đã được ghi nhận rõ ràng qua những lẵng hoa từ mọi cấp của thành phố; qua những đoàn người kính viếng Cậu trong suốt tang lễ; qua những giọt nước mắt của những người thầy, cô đồng nghiệp và đàn em đã được Cậu dìu dắt qua bao năm.

Chỉ vì tui sinh thằng thứ 3 mà anh mất huy chương lao động hạng nhất – thầy Lương tâm sự
– Tau mà cũng sinh được 1 thằng như m thì t cũng làm rồi!!

Luôn có 1 sự hài hước, hóm hỉnh nhưng sâu sắc và vị tha trong những câu nói của cậu.

Sáng đó mọi người tiễn Cậu đi tiếp một chuyến đi mới…

2015’s Resolutions

My theme for 2015 is: WILD

I came across this super funny quote:

My goal for 2015 is to accomplish the goals of 2014 which I should have done in 2013 because I made a promise in 2012 & planned in 2011.

It’s funny yet quite true as well. I realise how many times I have made a New Year resolution and yet not been able to follow & achieve it.

Without further ado, 3 keys habits for 2015 are:

1. Join the 5 am Club
2. Visualise + Meditate twice daily
3. Read, Learn & Do something – definite – everyday

You may notice that, it’s basically same as my last year resolutions – which is really embarrassing! Of course I will keep my one-sentence journal which I have done quite well in the last 2 months of 2014 too.

Challenges that I pursue:

1. Complete 5km under 25′ to join MR25 Club
2. Complete 100 slow push ups; film & share it online!

I learn from Gretchen Rubin the idea of creating a theme for the entire year & summarize it in one word. I find it fascinating. Then I realise although I didn’t know about this idea yet, I did tell my close friend 2014 is a fundamental – absolutely essential year for me during the last CYN. It didn’t turn out quite well as expected yet when looking back I understand why I label it “fundamental”. At least it was a necessary set-back if not a success in many aspects.

This year, I call it “Wild” – I prefer to use an adjective to a noun as it sounds stronger, more exciting – simply because this is the year I must overcome all the fear; go out there; get what I want done and play everything wildly. No more excuses; no more “compromise”.

999 Rules for my unborn Children

They’re called “Rules” but they are actually lessons that I’ve been experienced & learned. They’re said to be for my Unborn Son but they are for me as well. I am not allowed to repeat the same mistakes. It’s stupid. I know & remember that.

1. Don’t make the same mistake twice (whether it’s in love, work, business, personal stuff)

2. Play a main sport > football? Open to other (kinds of) sports too.
3. Learn to play a musical instrument > Guitar at least

15. Learn to cook > at least your favorite dishes sons!

20. Do not have a mobilephone

    What to do when you’re a adult

22. Meditate
23. Master those skills
24. Accomplish some challenges > 100 push ups, marathon > ultramarathon
25. Create./ build your own business
26. Have a girlfriend
