Hoàng Hữu Thường

Theo như tích cũ, tương truyền câu ca dao này do chính những cư dẫn vạn đò bao đời sống khốn khổ lênh đênh trên mặt nước dọc sông Hương đặt ra để nêu gương sáng và nhắc nhở con cháu của mình về sự tích một người con dân vạn đò đặc biệt: chịu khó lao động, học hành, quyết chí dùi mài kinh sử, lên bờ thi thố tài năng, chiếm cứ bảng vàng, được khắc tên lên bia Văn Miếu ở kinh thành Huế.

Vị Tiến Sĩ xuất thân từ vạn đò

Chuyện kể rằng, Hoàng Hữu Thường – tên thật là Hoàng Ngọc Khâm sinh năm Quý Mão – Thiệu Trị thứ 3 (1843) trong một gia đình kẻ vạn, nhiều đời bôn ba sông nước làm nghề chài lưới. Đến thời ông, dù rất cần cù những vẫn không có gì khá hơn; cũng chỉ quanh năm vất vả với những việc “không tên” để kiếm ăn qua ngày. Suốt một thời gian rất dài, nhiều thế hệ gia đình ông sống chen chúc trên một con thuyền nhỏ ở xóm vạn chài Quảng Tế. Hàng ngày ngụp lặn, xuôi ngược sống Hương, có khi theo đuổi đánh bắt cá ra tận phá Tam Giang, để rồi tối về neo đậu những con thuyền nhỏ với nhau hình thành nên làng thuỷ điện, chỉ cách kinh thành Huế vài dặm…

Năm Tự Đức thứ 26 (1873) khoa Quý Dậu đậu giải Nguyên (đậu đầu Cử
nhân). Năm thứ 28 khoa Ất Hợi đậu Hội Nguyên, thi Đình đậu Tam Giáp Đồng Tiến sĩ xuất thân (1975) năm 32 tuổi.

Quá trình phục vụ

Ban đầu ông nhập ngạch Hàm Lầm viện sau được bổ làm Tri phủ, rồi làm Viên ngoại lang tại Cơ mật viện, thăng Nội các Tham biện, rồi chuyển sang Binh bộ Biện lý, Tham biện Thương bạc sự vụ.

Năm Tự Đức thứ 35 (1882), Pháp vây hãm thành Hà Nội, Hữu Thường theo cùng với Khâm sai Trần Đình Túc đến nơi lấy lại thành, rồi lĩnh Bố chánh (chính sứ) Hà Nội. Sau đó ông được triệu về Kinh lãnh chức Thị lang sung biện Các vụ.

Năm thứ 36 (1883), trấn Hải thành thất thủ, ông tham dự vào việc nghị hoà. Sau khi giảng hòa, ông được cử làm Định ước Tham Biện – coi việc ký kết hiệp ước kiêm Chưởng văn thư sự vụ – quản lý văn thư.

Bấy giờ ở Bắc kỳ sau khi hữu sự, lòng người ngờ sợ, trộm giặc nổi lên tứ tung. Sứ thần Pháp xin phái viên chức giỏi giang mau đến xử trí. Triều đình cử Đoàn Văn Hội và Hữu Thường. Thường được thăng Thự Tham tri Lại bộ, sung làm Phó khâm sai đại thần, cùng với Văn Hội đến bàn định về việc thuế lệ khai mỏ. Khi trở về Kinh Đô Huế, ông được bổ sang Hộ bộ. 

Khi vua Đồng Khánh (Cảnh Tôn Thuần hoàng đế) bắt đầu lên nối ngôi (1885), ông được bạt Công bộ Thượng thư. Đầu năm thứ 2 (1887), ông lãnh Lễ bộ Thượng thư kiêm cai quản bộ lại. Năm thứ 3 (1888), ông được cho lãnh hiệp biện đại học sĩ. 

Tháng 7 năm ấy đổi sang Bộ Binh Thượng Thư sung Cơ Mật Viện, kiêm Giảng quan Quốc Sử Quán, Phó Tổng Tài – dịch sách làm sử, kiêm Văn Thần Phò mã Quốc Tử Giám sự vụ – dạy các vị Hoàng Tử Kiến Phước, Hàm Nghi, Đồng Khánh ở trường Quốc Tử Giám. Ông làm chưa được bao lâu thì lâm bệnh và mất.

“Hữu” Thường

Một hôm vua Tự Đức ngự giá trên sông Hương, xuôi thuyền Rồng đến hóng mát tại vừa Dữ Giã Viên cùng với các quan trong triều đình trong đó có Ngài Cố Thượng Hoàng Hữu Thường. Nhà vua sực nhớ hoàn cảnh gia đình của NGài, bèn chỉ về thửa đất ở Cồn Giã Viên nằm trong lòng sông Hương (hai bên kia bờ là Phường Đúc & Kim Long) và phán rằng: Ta ban cho ông Thường dãi đất đằng kia để lập nghiệp. Ngài vừa mừng, trong lòng vẫn áy náy tự hỏi tại sao mình được nhà Vua ban ân nhiều như thế!?

Ngài vốn là người thông minh, học rộng tài trí, đức độ, tính liêm khiết,
chí công vô tư, nên Ngài đã vào bái kiến nhà vua trình bày sự việc. Sau một hồi suy nghĩ, nhà vua phán rằng: Trong Triều chắc chỉ có nhà ngươi là không có lòng tham, nay ta gọi ngươi là Hoàng Hữu Thường thay vì Hoàng Ngọc Thường. Hàm ý của nhà vua : chữ HỮU là “chỉ có”, (trong Triều đình chỉ có Ông Thường là một Ông quan liêm khiết, chí công vô tư). Từ đó con cháu của Ngài đổi chữ lót từ “Hoàng Ngọc” thành “Hoàng Hữu”!

Danang International Marathon 2019 – An Amateur Experience

This is my first ever participation in a marathon. So there is a lot to learn. I didn’t even know how to wear the tracking BIB number 😀

• The actual result will be *somehow* much more terrible than the one in practice, e.g 51’27s for 10.41 km vs 55’52 for 10 km. So,
  • Always prepare for the worst mentally and physically
  • Practice under tougher conditions
• Practice on the actual running path a few times beforehand if possible.
  I didn’t even though it’s hosted at “home”. Only “walkthrough” it twice…
  • Get used to the path and key milestones.
  • Plan my energy accordingly. I burnt out at the end when estimating the KM marker wrongly before the competitions.
• There are a lot of external & unexpected factors that could affect your performance:
  • There are (a lot) runners who participate for fun – or out of company compulsory. When they slow down or take a selfie; focus on yourself – your own gameplan.
  • And there are serious & super-start players. When they speed up, don’t be scared! Just ignore it. They’re not your competitors anyway.
  • People on different races could run on the same paths. So don’t be surprised when there are lots of people running ahead of you.
  • Reaching the finish line first doesn’t necessarily mean they run faster than you in a marathon, especially you’re on the last race corrals.

Running is exciting. It’s better for both health & wealth. Playing a competitive sport is closely related to running a business especially in terms of physical and mental toughness.

“I hate Monday”

“Today is Sunday. And I simply hate tomorrow!”

That was exactly the same my thinking when was I was still an employee. And it was understandable. But now I’m the founder of my own start-up. How come I still freaking hate Monday?

When things went wrong, I hate it!

When things went right, I hate it too, somehow!

Negative thinking.

I can’t stand bad results. “Am I really that bad?”

Good results require better ones in the near future. “How could I slow down that growth?”

I’m afraid to show up tomorrow – with higher responsibility and expectation.

Isn’t it a “strategy of life” where highly successful people hate themselves?
Sort of, but not really.

I’m scared!

In a certain way, I kinda hated my own company – the culture & expectations.

Pressure!

A lot of pressure!

Stupid people could somehow succeed. But Startup & Success are really not meant for mentally weak people!

I reached out to my friend for help… And it was better for a while before the fear came back.

I was clueless… And terrified! Of everything!

…

It turns out no one could really help me but myself.

Things started getting better when I confront the fear myself!

I face it!

I let it go.

When things get tough, I will get tougher. When things go well, I’m grateful that it works. I have a good faith it will just get better and better tomorrow.

I AM a success. And I WILL succeed! Hugely.

Confidence

Confidence comes from the inside. You feel confident, and so, you act confidently; not the other way around.

Well, sometimes you’ve gotta to act confidently in order to feel confident – or “fake it until you make it”. But you can’t always depend on the outside (environment) to feel confident inside. That’s why there are many people who are handsome, talented and highly rated yet have low esteem and bad self-image. They just can’t do great things in life with a terrible self-image.

True confidence comes from inside out.

Confident people do things others are afraid of. They speak up when others don’t. They takes the lead and initiatives when others are frightened. They represent; they lead and show the way. Others feel good and safe under their leadership.

The reverse is true for arrogant people. They make others feel bad and inferior. Ultimately, they have a low self-esteem and self-image. Sometimes, they only feel good only when others feel bad. They must be right all the time. That feeds their ego, which otherwise always feel insufficient.

Confidence is a necessary ingredient of success. Yet overconfidence leads to arrogance and loss of focus.

It sucks to be a NICE guy!

It sucks to be a NICE guy! Who is a nice guy then?

A nice guy is basically a guy who

• always try to please others
• usually says “Yes” to any requests
• always try to fit in
• is afraid of “risks” & unfamiliar things
• rather follow a crowd than to lead and stand out!
• accepts his “fate”; doesn’t have any drive to move forwards!
• doesn’t have his own opinions or don’t dare to voice out his. You usually hear him saying: “Anything! It’s up to you! You decide!”.

Nothing was wrong being a nice guy. Generally speaking, people especially girls do like (but don’t love) nice guys! The thing is it’s now past the time when you can win being a Mr. Nice guy or Mr. popular.

Isn’t it nice guys that always lose, especially when it matters – in love; in life and essentially in almost everything he does!!?

Together with constantly finding people who always support you, you’ve gotta find your haters as well. Actually you don’t needa find them. Haters will automatically appear when you voice out your own (unique) opinions and beliefs. That also means you dare to upset and annoy many people including your so-called “friends”.

Trump becomes the US President by provoking fear & hatred among American people. No one gives you more attention than your haters! Haters hate, criticize and backbite you whenever they can, and so, accidentally put you in the headline. And ATTENTION is everything on this digital age where people are constantly overloaded with information.

If no one hates you, then not enough people know you! – Uncle G.
(Or probably you’re a nice guy!)

A nice guy, on the other hand, pretty much avoid attention! He just wanna be a “normal” guy who’s happy with his own dull and boring life. No arguments; no drive; no ambition; nothing. He lives a life that’s not worth living again. What a waste of time being nice guy!

Because of his nature, a nice guy is often times a Gentleman! But not being a nice guy doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not a gentleman or you’re an asshole! A real man decide; a nice guy follow and an asshole doesn’t bother.

Having said that, a tough gentleman doesn’t always have to argue – create trivial conflicts and essentially “win” everything on his day-to-day activities. He listens; say what he needa say – no more no less. Most importantly, he knows exactly what he wants, and so, pay no attention to life’s trivia (especially the nonsense self-talks: what does she think of me? What if I’m wrong…).

Philosophy

Nowadays, hardly anyone likes Philosophy even people who study them (!?). Understandably, it’s easier to complain, talk about your next trip and the upcoming movie than to talk about something too abstract, too powerful that you probably don’t really understand.

Unfortunately, your life is determined by your philosophy!

Philosophy is basically just a set of rules & principles that govern your thinking and actions. It forms your belief about life (or anything in general). Most people have their own philosophy and belief. And we can more or less tell one’s philosophy and belief about anything through their languages and actions.

If you believe in karma, you don’t do bad things.
If you believe in luck and fate, you don’t bother trying as everything’s already decided.
If you’re money or health-conscious, you’ll do anything – everything to get more money or become healthy! You value them more than anything else.

What if you don’t have any life’s philosophy?
Well, what if the ship you’re on doesn’t have a map and compass? It will follow the wind’s directions. Whichever directions the wind blows, you’ll follow. You don’t really know where you’re going.

Similarly, if you don’t have any life’s philosophy, then you probably follow your friends’; your parent’s, or even worse, the media’s philosophy. Whatever they tell you to play, travel and eat (which is oftentimes not good for you), you’ll follow. No questions asked.

If that’s the case, then too Bad for you!

Eventually though, you will form your own philosophy according to your character, education and environment.

That’s how important philosophy is! Unfortunately, we’re oftentimes “blind to the obvious,” and we’re also “blind to our blindness” (Thinking Fast and Slow).
